As photographers, there are some weddings you get the chance to capture that stick with you. On most wedding days, the flow of the day will feel very similar. You’ll hear common phrases or themes throughout the day. And while every ceremony we photograph is different and unique, for the most part, there’s a huge sense of normalcy and knowing what to expect next. Then there are those weddings that are so different, they pull at your heartstrings. Their ceremonies are so totally them and allow you to feel like you’ve known their love story as long as they have. For me, that was Joe & Kat’s intimate barn wedding last Thursday.
Yes, you heard that right. Joe & Kat shared their vows in front of their closest family on a Thursday evening in an intimate ceremony in their barn. Which included the new bride and groom sharing their first dance immediately after their first kiss. Right at the altar. Followed by the cake cutting. All in one quick ceremony. It was completely different and a lot of fun.
One of my favorite moments, when the two recited vows they had written. Joe slyly slipped in a line about Kat agreeing to hike the Appalachian Trail with him. Which she quickly refuted. Leading to laughter amongst their family and themselves. It’s so refreshing to witness a couple who feel so free to be completely themselves in what can seem like a stiff moment. But not J&K.
Just being with them for a couple of hours, I got a true sense of the love and admiration they have for one another. And that is one of my favorite things about capturing love stories. Getting to see real-life love. How beautiful and imperfect it is. Thank you Joe & Kat for asking us to join you in capturing your new union. I cannot wait to help you celebrate when we see you in a year!
